EXERCISE AND DEPRESSION If you are suffering from depression, exercise is an excellent way to help feel better. When you ex- ercise your body releases natural chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins trigger positive feelings in the body and interact with receptors in the brain that reduce the perception of pain. This “natural high” is a wonderful benefit for people feeling stressed out or depressed. Many people become depressed because they ei- ther feel out of control or a victim of their circum- stances. By setting up a regular exercise routine, you begin getting the feeling of taking control of your life and doing something beneficial for yourself. This feeling of control helps battle the feelings of help- lessness. As you start to get into shape, you begin to realize that you can change your existing situation if you just apply yourself and make positive changes. Group exercise classes such as Zumba, Qigong, and Aerobic classes also help by adding the social factor of doing positive things with other people.
