SCIATICA NERVE PROBLEMS by Gordon Barth One of the most common problems I hear about at my fitness center is Sciatica nerve irritation. This can be a very painful and debilitating condition. There are several causes of Sciatica nerve pain. A bulging disc or a back/pelvis misalignment may pinch the nerve coming out of the back. This requires the assis- tance of a doctor. A more common problem is when the nerve runs through an overly tightened or inflamed Piriformis muscle. This muscle is located in the buttocks area of the body. This pain may be resolved by stretching the Piriformis muscle. There are two common stretches that you can do. One is lying down and the other is sitting. While lying on the floor or your bed, bring your left knee up towards your chest. Your left hand should grab your left knee and gently pull the knee towards your chest. With your right hand, grab your left ankle and pull the left leg across your body. The simultaneous pulling of your knee to your chest and your leg across your body isolates the Piriformis muscle. Hold this stretch then release it. Do this for both legs. Eventually work up to holding this stretch for 60 seconds. This stretch should be done at least twice a day. Prescott Valleyʼs Premiere Senior Fitness Center 3155 WINDSONG DR. PRESCOTT VALLEY www.islandsfitness.com 759-2271 The next stretch can be done sitting down. While sit- ting erect in a chair, cross your left leg over your right leg. Now lean forward towards your left foot. These isolates and stretches your Piriformis muscle. Make sure to stretch both sides. At Islands Fitness, we promote a combination of muscle toning and stretching. Many aches and pains can be elim- inated by proper exercise. I like to call it preventative maintenance for your body. We recommend exercising a minimum of three times a week. Some form of exercise should be done by everybody. If you do not have a regu- larly scheduled exercise routine, you are doing your body a huge disservice. If youʼve tried home exercise but just havenʼt been able to stick with it because of all the distractions, consider joining a fitness center. Make a commitment to show up three times a week. Exercise with others who have the same desires and goals as you to stay in shape. Exercising doesnʼt have to be a lonely endeavor. It can be fun when done with others.
