Parvati Magazine May 2014 - Feeling Alive | Page 23

MUSIC wrote the song “Happy”. Yes, I am referring to Pharrell Williams. He and his new record “GIRL” celebrate feeling alive. “GIRL” is a musically alive, feel good record that is well worth the cash outlay. Recently, Parvati and I were watching The Voice UK cheering for our friend Leo Ihenacho, who was a contestant on this year’s show. The UK version of this show seems to be more rooted in heart and less ego driven than the US version. The finalists included a 50-year-old folk singer that sings as beautifully as Eva Cassidy. Her name is Sally Barker and yes, I will be purchasing all her records. Here is a link to one of her beautiful performances. A 19 year old R&B singer that sings in a musical style that reminds me of the greats like Luther Vandross, James Ingram and Barry White. He actually sings like all three rolled into one. His name is Jermaine Jackman and, yes, I will be buying his album when it comes out. Here is a link to one of his great performances. Then there was a true powerhouse belter who sings with such power, heart and perfection that she could easily hold her own beside the likes of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Yes, I know that is a big statement! Her name is Christina Marie. Check her out here. As if that is not enough feel alive music suggestions for one month, I need to mention the biggest breakout artist that I have heard in a long time. Every now and then (used to be more then than now) a funky feel alive vibe comes along that hits you right in the tushy and instantly grooves you into shaking your tail feather as if no one is watching. Meters, or George Clinton. So, be prepared to be hit with rhythm sticks and brace yourself for a really big global hit. I am talking about Britain’s Paloma Faith and her track “I Can’t Rely On You.” Like all great R&B, the bluesy lyrics tell a story of heartbreak, but the attitude of Paloma Faith, the beat and camaraderie of the back up singers, brass band section, strings and, yes cowbells, makes you shake those bluesy feelings right into outer space. Bravo Paloma Faith. Loving her attitude, style, and 100% conviction to letting her freak flag fly, I am an instant fan. Here is the performance that makes me feel so very alive. It is available now in the UK, with the North American street date to be announced. Hope you enjoy it also. A chunk of ever so delicious funk is all it takes to make me feel alive and I can’t think of this much funk on a stage since James Brown, the Funky Since 1994, Rishi Gerald, founder and CEO of RishiVision and entrepreneurial coach, has empowered thousands of businesses.
