PROGRAMS Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (O & DO) Pediatric Dentistry (PEDS) This 24-month full-time ADA/CODA accredited program in Advanced Education in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (O & DO) will welcome its initial residency class in July of 2015 at its Sunset Park, Brooklyn location. At NYU Lutheran Dental, O & DO is a hospital-based program. Residents will spend approximately 25% of the program participating in didactic lectures, a study of the orthodontic and related literature, research initiatives, and case preparation and presentation. 5% of the program will be engaged in pedagogical activities. The remaining 70% of time will be spent rendering direct patient care. The goal is for each resident to start in excess of 75 cases during the first year. Residents work closely with faculty mentors as they are immerse in a clinicially intense environment using various contemporary applicances and therapeutic tratent modalities. This 24-month hospital- and health centerbased training program provides a strong didactic and clinical foundation in Pediatric Dentistry with emphasis on pediatric medicine, hospital dentistry, interceptive orthodontics and conscious sedation. The curriculum emphasizes pediatric medicine and dentistry, the behavioral and pharmacological management of children, oral biology for the pediatric dentist, and general anesthesia with attention given to both well children and children who are medically compromised, developmentally disabled, or victims of trauma. Residents train with specialists in all disciplines of dentistry, including but not limited to orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics and dental anesthesia as well as developing an expertise in treating patients with special needs.
