Meet Don Still, Resident of the Month Don Still was born in Arkansas near the Buffalo River on April 17, 1938, to parents, Rufus and Virsalee, who were farmers and loggers. “They were good and hard working parents,” said Don. He had five siblings, four of which are still living. Don at- tended school in Yellville, Ark. It was a small school and his graduating class had 17 students. Growing up, Don enjoyed being outdoors and going hunting and fishing. He helped out on the farm and at age 14 he started hauling timber. Don would help load and cut the wood to take to the local saw mill for money to help the family. “It was hard work, but I enjoyed it,” said Don. After graduating in 1957, he left home and went to Wichita, Kan. to work in a hardware store and also for The Boeing company. After working at The Boeing Company, Don be- gan working at General Motors. This is where he met his wife, JoAnne. Don worked with JoAnne’s brother and her brother introduced them. The couple married just be- fore Don was drafted into the Army. He served in the Army for two years, mostly work- ing as a mechanic. After returning from the Army the couple moved to Kansas City and Don continued to work for General Motors. Joanne worked for Western Electric for 10 years and then started her own medical records service. The couple have two boys, Daren and Bryan, and 2 grandsons. Don shared that throughout his life he enjoyed spending time with his family very much. They would go fishing and hunting together and took many family vacations. A favorite trip that the family took together was to Canada, because it was a “beautiful country.” Don and Joanne moved to Bolivar in 1988 after his retirement. She continued with her business and he enjoyed farming in the Urbana area. Don moved to Parkview in May and shared that this is a “comfortable place to live.” He has enjoyed making new friends and loves the food!
