Meet Clara Chapin, Resident of the Month
Amber Clark
Clara Fernandez Chapin was born Jan. 21, 1959,
in Havana, Cuba to Delia and Jesus Fernandez.
Clara was named after her aunt who was unable
to have her own children. Clara lived with her
family in Havana for eight years until her father
brought her and her four brothers to America.
Delia stayed in Havana but kept in touch with
her family even if she couldn’t join them in
America. Jesus worked as a bus mechanic.
The Fernandez family lived in Haverhill, Massa-
chusetts for a few years and then moved to West
Palm Beach, Florida. When Clara was 18 she left
Florida to return to Massachusetts, which she still
calls her home. During her time in Massachusetts
she would hitchhike to work. One day during her
