The People! I love meeting
everyone and hearing their
stories.
What is your favorite
thing to do when you are
not at work?
I enjoy cooking, reading,
and travelling. I also love
watching my kids play
sports. I have 7 kids rang-
ing from 12-23. I’ve been
married for 24 years.
Meet Berton Recknor, Resident of the Month
Berton Recknor was born April 29, 1928, in
Creston, Iowa. He is the oldest son of three boys
born to parents, Randall and Margaret Recknor.
The Recknor’s were farmers and also ran a Meat
Processing Plant that contained 500 lockers for
family meat storage. Bert’s dad didn’t believe in
using tractors so all of their farming was done with
horses.
Bert spent most of his childhood years working on
the farm and playing “a little basketball for fun.”
He graduated from High School in 1945 and
joined the Navy. Bert attended boot camp with
around 200 men and after graduating a handful of
the Naval Men were stationed in the Mojave De-
sert. “The desert is a hell of a place for a Sailor”
shared Bert. After a few years he was moved to
Port Mugu and worked in transportation driving
everything, “from a bicycle to a super semi.”
Bert was discharged from the Navy in 1952.
After discharging he continued to work in transportation, driving a truck. During
this time he travelled to all 48 continental states. Bert moved to Fairfield, Iowa, and
began working at a Broom factory. He met his wife, Patricia, through her father
who also worked at the factory. In 1965, the couple was married in a church wed-
ding. Then, in 1966, they moved to Kansas City in search of a better paying job. He
began working at Safeway Grocer in the warehouse and worked there for 20 years.
Bert and Patricia had eight children, four boys and four girls. He has numerous
grandchildren and great grandchildren. Throughout his life, his family enjoyed
camping and visiting many state parks. He has a love for westerns and at one point
had over 500 westerns on tape.
Bert moved to Parkview in September 2019 and he appreciates the good care he
receives here and that the staff works very hard. Bert’s faith is important to him. “I
believe in God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” said Bert. “I am as
human as anyone with feelings and emotions. I’ve used my religion and the good
sense that God gave me and things have gone pretty smoothly for me. We always
have those times of failure, but you’ve got to get back up and try again.”
Congratulation Bert on being chosen as the PVHCF resident of the month.
