Meet Rik i Lipe, Resident of the Month
Lola “Riki” Lipe was born May 9, 1934, to Richard
and Marcena Blackman, in Kansas City, Missouri.
During World War II, Richard fought in the Navy and

school, Riki’s family moved to Guam to help rebuild

from the damage of the war. While attending George
Washington High School, Riki would sing in military
night clubs around the island.
After enjoying time around Guam, Riki’s family
sent her back to Berkley, California, to attend Arm-
strong Business College. The family Riki lived with
invited her to an alumni mixer; she stated, “I was in-
vited to sing onstage, and when I was there, I couldn’t see the crowd, but I noticed a
side door open. When I looked over I saw a man that took my breath away.” Later that
night, that man came over to her table, and introduced himself as Dean Lipe. The cou-
ple were married two weeks later, on New Year’s Eve, 1954. In 1964, Riki and Dean
went to Children’s Home Society, in Oakland, to adopt a young baby boy. Riki saw the
most active and aware baby; it was love at first sight. They named him Steven, and he
has blessed them with two grandchildren.
Riki worked in the records office of W.R. Watson and Staff. Dean worked as the Vice
President for multiple savings and loans companies. When Dean and Riki moved to
Missouri, he opened his own restoration business. Riki spent time teaching painting
