Denyse, and her younger brother John, were raised in Belgium by their mother. The family owned and operated a factory that produced cream cheese. While growing up, Denyse had pet rabbits. She would dress them up and push them around in her baby buggy. Denyse fondly remembers her annual trip to the seashore where they enjoy the sand and water. In 1946, during her annual summer trip, Denyse met George Vogel. At the time, George was serving in the United States Army and was stationed in Belgium. Shortly before he was to return to the states, George and Denyse were married in a civil ceremony. It wasn’t long after, that Densye boarded the George Washington Goettle ship and left for New York. After she arrived, she took the train and traveled from New York to Saint Louis, where she would meet her husband. When she got off the train she couldn’t find George, since he was wearing civilian clothing, she had trouble recognizing him. George worked for many years as a manager at the Kraft Food Companiy. Because of his position, the couple were relocated to several different towns around the state. George and Denyse lived in Latham, Eldon, Versailles and Buffalo. While in Versailles, the couple purchased two farms and began raising cattle, hogs, and appaloosa horses. After settling in Buffalo, George was offered a promotion, which also meant another move for his family. George decided to retire and the couple decided purchase and operate the Buffalo Motel. Denyse and George had two children: Gary, who lives in California, Mo. and Helen, who lives in Carthage, Mo. Both are married and have blessed them with one grandchild each. Denyse looks forward to having great, great grandchildren. Denyse recalls sewing all of her daughters clothing as well as her own clothing. One of her favorite pieces was a beautiful winter coat. Denyse loved to bake for friends and family. She was well known for her homemade cookies, cakes, French bread and cream pies. People often would request her baked goods for bake sales. Along with baking and caring for her family, Denyse also sold Avon products. In 2014, after 50 years of selling for Avon, Denyse was able to retire. While at Park View Healthcare Facility, Denyse enjoys working on jigsaw puzzles and is an avid reader. She enjoys a good cup of coffee with chocolate. She has a wonderful sense of humor and enjoys being around people and loves to laugh. She shared that her favorite thing about Park View Healthcare Facility is how very neat and clean everything is.
