RECREATION FITNESS & In 2018, the Community Fitness & Wellness Center purchased and installed new Life Fitness strength equipment, along with Precor treadmills, ellipticals, and recumbent bikes, which completed the long-awaited transformation. At the Humana Fitness and Wellness Center, we replaced the 20 Cycling bikes and painted the Cycling Room, converted the Power Lifting room to a Strength and Conditioning Room, replaced the two StairMasters, and added a calf extension machine. In January 2018, we began accepting the Optum Fitness Advantage Program. In June 2018, two of our fitness staff members received their “Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s” program certifications. What is Rock Steady Boxing? Rock Steady Boxing, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, gives people with Parkinson’s disease hope by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing- based fitness curriculum. The Recreation & Fitness Unit includes the Humana Fitness & Wellness Center, located at the Civic Center and the Community Fitness & Wellness Center, located at the Community Center. Combined, both offer a wide variety of more than 60 fitness classes a month, which include Senior Fitness, Zumba and Yoga. As of August 30, 2018, there are 4,409 members. Fitness classes saw more than 49,654 participants. In addition to the members, both facilities welcomed 14,706 drop-ins, which includes basketball, Senior Fitness, Zumba, Yoga, racquetball, game room and the Fitness Center. For FY 2017-2018, the total number of “through the door” visits for both fitness centers, classes and recreation programs was 120,260. 9 The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed each year. Rock Steady Boxing is the first gym in the country dedicated to the fight against Parkinson’s. The mission of the Rock Steady Program is to empower people with Parkinson’s disease to “fight back.”
