ent directions. It was killing trees,
the tank, and it was close to ruining
the family’s farming business, which
depended on fresh water. We filed
a law suit and went to mediation,
and they offered us a few thousand
dollars,” Eggleston continued. “Not
close to what we were asking for.
We were there all day, and a media-
tor came into the room and said,
‘Jim, there is a 900-pound gorilla in
the other room. You do realize that
don’t you?’ And I said, ‘You tell them
there is a 70-pound wolverine in this
room, and it’s not letting go.’ So that
evening, our client got a big chunk
of money.” Later, Eggleston’s wife
asked, “Did you get enough money
for your client?” Eggleston told her,
“I got all they had.” The very next
morning, the energy company was
taken over by a larger energy compa-
ny. Had the case not settled then, it
would likely have taken years.”
“Sometimes you get your client
lots of money, but I took a lot of joy
in taking all that energy company
had,” he said. “The family was
happy. We put in provisions to
protect their land.”
To him, it was more than getting
his client a tidy sum of money.
“We had a chance to make things
right,” he said. “Cases like that are
rare. You win a lot of cases but how
many times do you make it right?
Very few.”
Eggleston likes to see life improve
for a client, to help them reach
closure.
“I like to see people be able to
close the door on one chapter and go
on to the next phase,” he said. “To
leave issues behind.”
Eggleston and partners recently
purchased The Texas Opry Theater
on York Ave. after Jerry Carter, its
owner and founder died, leaving the
Weatherford landmark to his widow,
Marilyn, to deal alone with the build-
ing and the entertainment business
