WWI battlefields were killing fields scarred by trenches and the carnage of combatants felled by new and devastating weaponry, includ- ing deadly, and for the time highly advanced, artillery and pernicious chlorine and mustard gases. Tanks made their first appearance on the battlefield in the Great War.  America entered the war late, on April 6, 1917. It was an unpopu- lar war in the US, and President Woodrow Wilson tried for two and a half years to keep the country out of the fighting. Reports of horrendous atrocities in Belgium and Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare, which affected the US, contributed to America’s entry into the war. As in any war, intelligence and communication played a crucial role in the execution of battlefield strat- egy. It soon became clear that the Germans had an excellent grasp of the English language and were quite adept at intercepting and breaking codes.
