noteworthy.
WWI battlefields were killing
fields scarred by trenches and the
carnage of combatants felled by new
and devastating weaponry, includ-
ing deadly, and for the time highly
advanced, artillery and pernicious
chlorine and mustard gases. Tanks
made their first appearance on the
battlefield in the Great War.
America entered the war late,
on April 6, 1917. It was an unpopu-
lar war in the US, and President
Woodrow Wilson tried for two and
a half years to keep the country out
of the fighting. Reports of horrendous
atrocities in Belgium and Germany’s
unrestricted submarine warfare,
which affected the US, contributed to
America’s entry into the war.
As in any war, intelligence and
communication played a crucial role
in the execution of battlefield strat-
egy. It soon became clear that the
Germans had an excellent grasp of
the English language and were quite
adept at intercepting and breaking
codes. This, of course, frustrated
American efforts, often with bloody
consequences. It was a problem.
