first painting to an elementary school
teacher and had his first gallery show
at 21. But only recently has his art
become his “day job.”
“My parents thought that art
would not be a great way to support
myself and support a family, and they
wanted me to go another direction,”
Jones recalled. So he earned a degree
in advertising from the University of
Texas.
“It’s always been something that
has added financially … but I always
had galleries carrying my work, and
my goal was to get busy enough, at
some point, to just paint and make a
living painting,” he said, adding he’s
been painting full-time for the past
couple of years. Goal attained. For
many years he operated multiple franchises of a well-known restaurant.
Asked about his artistic inclination, Jones said, “I don’t know how I
got it. I’m so far off the chart from everybody else … in my family. I have
five brothers and one sister. And I’ve
got doctors and dentists and MBAs in
insurance in the family. I’m the only
one who got the art/painting artistic
gene.” Even a casual examination of
his work proves he did get it. What
does it mean to him?
“It’s everything,” he said. “If I
couldn’t paint, I’d be so depressed
… like the guy who cut off his ear.
