What is an Oncology Medical Home? How do cancer patients benefit? “There is nothing more important to me as a physician than your cancer treatment. I’ve been in practice for nearly two decades and have had the privilege of telling many patients that there is life beyond cancer. As president of The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, I want to lead by example, practicing a firm belief that all patients should receive the finest medical care available, with the same concern and compassion as a cherished member of the family.” Ray Page, D.O., Ph.D. President and Medical Oncologist The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders I am so excited to announce that The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is one of only 9 pioneering practices in the U.S. that has been fully accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as an Oncology Medical Home (OMH)! So what? Why is that important to a person with cancer? In recent years there have been serious national concerns about the rising costs of cancer care as well as the quality of care that is given to cancer patients. Innovative and early adopter practices like The Center, have explored a number of potential solutions including the development of treatment pathways, reforming payment, improving access to care, and restructuring patient care through value-driven care models. Notably, The Center was one of 7 practices in the U.S. that participated in a $19.8 million Medicare Innovation grant over the last 3 years. This grant allowed us to totally transform how we comprehensively take care of cancer patients under a concept called the “Oncology Medical Home” OMH. This study has shown that we can provide higher quality care, improve patient satisfaction, and at a 30% reduction in cost. Therefore, The Center has taken the key elements of providing the best value of cancer care and we have piloted them into the OMH. Those components include such things as: • A centralized protocol guided telephone nursing triage system • Expanded office hours into the evening and weekend • 24/7 access to a physician • Nurse navigators and educators to guide patients through their cancer journey • Psychosocial distress evaluations • Treatment pathway development and compliance • Improving laboratory/molecular diagnostics efficiency • Clinical trials/Research support • Survivorship clinic To learn more about cancer care issues or to consult with a physician about a cancer diagnosis, contact The Center at 817.759-7000. Much of the value gained from the OMH infrastructures comes through the refinement of day-to-day patient care processes resulting in superior outcomes. I am proud to say with confidence that The Center has more hands-on, boots on the ground experience in developing improved models of cancer care than any other practice in the entire U.S. Sometimes change can be extremely difficult on the doctors, staff, healthcare system, and most importantly the patients. However, we will always continue to strive to adapt and improve the quality and value of your cancer care at The Center. 37
