Zan Prince Community Leadership Award
Rachael Watson
R
achael Watson is another transplant who’s made Texas
her home. Born in Michigan, Watson was raised in
Albuquerque and moved to Texas in 1994 for college.
She graduated with a Bachelor’s in English and became
a teacher for a number of years. After being called to the
law world, Watson went back to school in 2012 and got
a Bachelor’s in Paralegal Studies and has never looked
back. This self-described “all-in girl” never takes no for an
answer and now owns her own business doing paralegal
work for attorneys all over the state.
“I do a lot of things for many attorneys including draft-
ing legal documents, legal research, trial support and
mediation,” Watson explained. “I love working in the
legal field and truly enjoy giving my services to those who
really need them. The attorneys that I work with allow me
the free time to give back and make a difference.”
Watson has never thought about being perceived as
a leader in the community and considers this award a
huge honor. She does believe in being an example in the
community.
“I believe that as a small business owner who wants to
succeed and make a difference I must always be a good
example to those around me. I have always remembered
to be respectful to each individual and care for the well-
being of others. I am tolerant and celebrate the diversity
in my community. I take the time to listen to others, value
their opinions and work in cooperation towards common
goals,” she said.
Watson said the only thing she would change would
be her ability to give her services to clients who can’t
afford to hire an attorney. She’s already given a large
portion of her time to pro-bono work, receiving the
Exceptional Pro Bono Service Award from the State Bar
of Texas, Paralegal Division. She has also been recog-
nized by the Pro Bono College of the State Bar of Texas
for service to the indigent and repeatedly recognized for
her contributions to the mission of American Legion and
American Legion Auxiliary. Watson loves to give back to
the community and feels it’s her duty to give her time to
those that need it in the community.
“I feel that as a small business owner I have an obli-
gation to my community to give back, so I am active
in many groups. Since my schedule can be flexible,
volunteering has become a part of my daily routine,”
she said. The giving back and volunteering she has
done in different groups is quite impressive, includ-
