PARKER COUNTY AG
William Wolfe
Like many kids showing animals, neither William Wolfe nor his mother
Barbi Beard-Wolfe knew much about pigs at first, but talking with her,
she’s a fountain of knowledge about the process now. William is
thirteen and attends Tyson Middle School in Weatherford. He’s attended
WISD since he was in Pre-K and is now in the eighth grade. William
started showing pigs because he needed an extracurricular activity and
he loves animals. Showing animals has given him plenty of experience,
but also taught William some important life lessons in his short showing career.
His experience includes showing pigs in two Fort Worth Stock Shows,
once in San Antonio and he has participated in three Texas State Fairs
in Dallas. His first time in Dallas, he earned eighth place in his breeder
class, while in Parker County, William’s pig was the reserve winner.
He’s also had success in the jackpot shows.
William just purchased his pig for this upcoming year’s competitions,
bidding over his mom’s budget of $500 during the breeder’s sale. He
has named his pig for this year “The Rock”, after Dwayne Johnson, but
in years past he has named pigs after movie stars with names ranging
from John Wayne characters to those seen in the Avengers movies.
He’s also named one after his favorite veterinarian. “He likes to feed them marshmallows and give them a bath,” his
mom said. “He likes to get them when they are babies. He sits down with them and when they are rooting around
in the mud, he plays with them. It helps him bond with them.” Although he’s had success, some of what he’s
learned is about disappointment.
“There’s a lot of tears. I think he’s learning life lessons. He’s participated in life like all of the other kids. He’s
more alike than different. I think it’s really great to see that people with disabilities can participate. It teaches
people how to work with people with disabilities,” Barbi mom said.
She said William understands what happens to the pigs after the shows, and is learning responsibility with feeding,
watering and training his show animals.
