Brittany Schnabel
Continuing her passion to the
collegiate level
Millsap senior Brittany Schnabel
is not new to athletic competition,
playing sports and/or competing
since the young age of 4. To even be
nominated for a Horizon Award she
is “shocked and humbled to have the
honor.”
“Brittany is a young lady with
beauty within and without,” Millsap
Superintendent Deann Lee said.
“Brittany is one of the most loyal and
committed young people I have ever
known with a work ethic like few I
have seen. She never lets her team-
mates, teachers, friends, or family
down. She is a special young lady.”
She began her athletic career
with soccer, playing for eight years,
including five years competitively
with youth association soccer in
Mineral Wells.
Brittany then dipped her toe
into gymnastics, attending tumbling
classes and eventually joining the
power tumbling team. In 2006, she
flew to Schaumburg, IL, for the Junior
Olympic National Championships,
winning a gold medal in trampoline
and silver medal in floor. She went
back in 2007 to the championships
in Memphis, TN, and came back with
three gold medals.
She continued to compete in
other sports. In cross country, she
became second team all-district and
qualified for regionals her freshman
year. She played softball her sopho-
more year and received second-
team all-district and academic all-
district. Brittany played volleyball
and was second-team all-district and
academic all-district her sophomore
and junior year, becoming District
Defensive MVP and academic all-
district her senior year. She ran track
for six years, and her sophomore year
her relay team broke the 400-meter
relay school record that had been
held for 29 years, and the 800-meter
relay school record that had been
held for 20 years.
But for Brittany, basketball has
been the sport that she considers her
favorite, her true passion since her
sixth-grade year.
“My favorite is playing basketball
and growing relationships with my
teammates, and most importantly
God,” Brittany said. “No matter what
the situation is, I can always turn
to Him and my teammates and my
coaches.”
Her sixth-grade year she played
her first season of select basket-
ball, playing for DFW Hawks in the
seventh grade. Brittany’s freshman
year she received district Newcomer
of the Year and academic all-district.
Her sophomore and junior years
she was first-team all-district and
academic all-district. In 2015, she
competed in her first college view-
ing tournament, and in 2016 she
received her first invitation to camps
from coaches that had watched
her play. After being looked at by
numerous schools, Brittany received
an offer from Hardin-Simmons
University in September to come play
basketball. Brittany verbally commit-
ted to play for Hardin-Simmons with
an undecided major.
The legacy she hopes to leave for
up and coming players?
“Being an example to young
athletes and females, not only as an
athlete to look up to, but as a person.
Earlier this year at volleyball, we had
a rough patch and most seniors quit. I
made a commitment to stick through
with my teammates and to my coach-
es. It was to show the young kids,
and it shows that God is in control
and can make you stronger,” she
said.
