man’s winning attitude in the face of
medical problems, some healthcare
providers have asked him to speak
with other cancer patients through
speeches.
Bryce is currently back on campus
and keeping various appointments to
monitor his progress. This Horizon
Award winner clearly is looking for
good things on his horizon.
Asked about the nomination,
he said, “When I first heard about
it I was pretty surprised. But it’s an
honor. It’s an honor to be nominated
for this award.”
Kember Bench
Using Her Gifts to Help Those
in Need
This fifth-generation Parker Countian
is a 13-year-old teen who has little
down time. The Victory Baptist
Academy eighth-grader is active in
several activities at school, includ-
ing volleyball and her favorite sport,

basketball.
Recently, Kember was selected by
her teachers for the National Junior
Honor Society in recognition of the
consistent “A” average and honor-
able character she has shown year
after year, both in and out of school.
Kember is well-known for involve-
ment with Parker County 4-H, and
has been an active member for six
years, showing in multiple catego-
ries including livestock, competing
in the Food and Nutrition Project,
Agricultural Product Identification,
Consumer Decision Making, and the
Clothing and Textiles Project.
Kember takes an active role in
the clothing project by helping lead
the monthly project meetings at the
county level while organizing and
leading several community service
projects through the Clothing and
Textiles Project Group. Most recently,
she organized a project to benefit
Alzheimer’s and dementia patients
by helping design, construct and sew
26 “Busy Blankets” that are used by
caregivers to help patients work on
cognitive and motor skills.
“She enjoys helping other people,
and has a fighting spirit not usually
seen in someone her age,” Carmen
Peterson said. “She is always happy
to lend a helping hand to friends and
family.”
Kember is an active member
of the Parker County 4-H County
Council, where she is in her fourth
year as a council officer. She also
takes time to help other 4-H members
