ome may wonder about the connection between chiropractic and
cancer, or more specifically, a local chiropractor and his cancer
connection.
Dr. Joel Kleven, D.C. began his chiropractic career in 1983 in
Weatherford, treating patients for the typical back pain, neck pain, head-
aches, and sciatica.
By the 1990s, he was the first chiropractor to begin utilizing Spinal
Decompression Therapy in North Texas from Abilene to Fort Worth and
Waco to the Red River.
This proved to be a very successful therapy for the treatment of bulg-
ing, ruptured and herniated spinal discs and he quickly developed a large
following of disc patients and continues to provide Spinal Decompression
Therapy today in his newly opened practice after a seven-year-hiatus.
Kleven Chiropractic is also home to two additional independent
providers, Stellar Face and Body by Mary Myers, CIDT, and Alyssa Bell’s
AbsoluteFit.
Dr. Kleven explains how he lost his sister to breast cancer and his
brother to Leukemia. When presented the opportunity to work with
Careity Foundation during his chiropractic hiatus, it seemed like a natural
fit. “I could utilize my educational background, my personal experiences
of dealing with family deaths, and my connections in Parker County to
help educate the public about the clinical services that Careity is able
to provide to cancer patients at The Center of Blood Disorders and Solis
Mammography,” Kleven commented. He
also had the opportunity to work directly
with patients, helping them to navigate
the system to provide resources and
direction in their treatment. At times he
could be seen sitting next to a patient in
the chemo room, “just talking” to help
them pass the time while undergoing
treatment. Just a little distraction from
their pain and suffering.
Kleven Chiropractic has recently
acquired a BEMER Vascular Therapy
Unit. Bio-Electro-Magnetic-Energy-
Regulation uses a low frequency pulsed
magnetic field. Research has shown that
exposing the body to BEMER physical
vascular therapy increases blood circu-
lation in the capillary and pre-capillary
vascular beds. This leads to an increased
oxygen exchange into the tissue along
with increased toxin and waste removal
from the cells.
There are ongoing studies relating to
the positive effects that BEMER EMF ther-
apy has on cancer cells. According to
research published in 2016 by the Public
Library of Science, it is suggested that
exposing certain types of cancer cells to
BEMER vascular therapy reduces cancer
cell radio resistance, making them more
susceptible to radiation treatment. In
other studies, a low-frequency pulsed
magnetic field was shown to decrease
the proliferation of certain cancer cells
as in osteosarcoma, breast cancer, colon
cancer, and melanoma.
In more general use, BEMER vascu-
lar therapy has been reported to reduce
chronic pain, inflammation, and fatigue.
Dr. Kleven continues to study the effi-
cacy of BEMER therapy as an adjunct
within his chiropractic practice.
Dr. Kleven has three sons, Chris and
his wife Priscilla who live in Haltom
City, Bryce who lives in Weatherford,
and John-Michael and his wife Skye and
their newborn, Carter who all reside in
Ft. Worth.
