Nurse Navigator and Social Worker Amanda Stevens was nursing her 2-month-old baby girl when she noticed a lump in her breast. Test later revealed the tumor to be a very aggressive type of breast cancer. “Amanda’s case was very complex for several reasons,” said Dr. Robyn Young, a breast specialist with The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Her tumor was large, involved lymph nodes, and was a fast moving type of cancer. This meant she needed chemotherapy before surgery and she needed it immediately. Amanda’s insurance company was giving her the run around, and this was taking precious time from her being able to receive the life saving treatment she so desperately needed. “My children need a mother, I have two babies to take care of,” said Amanda. At the time son Ryder was 2 and daughter Violet just 5 months old.
