Lucia Martinez Charity: Make-A-Wish® North Texas Bachelorette Lucia Martinez was born and raised in West Texas and has only been a Parker County resident for a year, but she’s thrilled to be competing. “I’m from Alpine and I lived there for 21 years. I was born and raised there and I’m 23,” Lucia told us. “I moved here in March of last year so I’m not new, new. I’ve been here a year.” Lucia is the Victims Assistant Coordinator in the district attorney’s office and was elated to be nominated as a bachelorette. “I was really delighted because charities are going to be involved and I’m new to Weatherford so I was lucky to be nominated and considered,” she said. Having not yet found her niche, Lucia is looking forward to the new experience and getting back into volunteering. “I’ve never done this before and I haven’t volunteered here in Parker County yet, but I did in Alpine. I volunteered in Déjà Vu where you can donate clothes and really anywhere I could be of help.” Recently she told her mom she was nominated and she had questions Lucia was just excited to get answered. “She laughed and she was asking if it was formal and if I went up on stage. I told her I had no idea. I don’t know how this works but I know I’m paired with Make-A-Wish® and Downtown Café.” Make-A-Wish is close to Lucia’s heart not just because of the good work they do for others but the works they have done for her family. “Well, it was kind of close to me because my 5-year-old niece has leukemia and so they [Make-A-Wish] sent her to Disney World for her fifth birthday,” Lucia said. “When I was looking at the list of charities, once I found out Make-A-Wish was a part of that I was like ‘I want them so that I can at least give back to them for being able to let her spend her birthday and give her the trip of a lifetime.’ She still talks about it till this day.” OCTOBER 2016 PA R K E R C O U N T Y T O D AY Downtown Café Chef and GM: Jason Ratliff For nine of his 11 or so years in the local restaurant sector Jason Ratliff has hung his hat at historic Downtown Cafe on the Weatherford Square where he is GM and chef. He is a veteran of the annual Bachelorette charity event. This year he joins Bachelorette Lucia Martinez to raise funds for the Make A Wish Foundation. “The community takes care of you so you’ve got to give back to it,” Ratliff said concerning his participation. “Make-A-Wish®, I also do their fundraising dinner every year, which we just did this month. So I’m connected with Make A Wish® North Texas anyway. I’ve been at every event except for one, I believe.” All the chef would divulge about Downtown’s dessert entry was that it will likely have peaches in it. 74
