He’s also the first person I had cold-called for an internship.” Springer was immediately impressed with Widler’s moxie, his courage as well as his professionalism.
“One of the things that I decided a long time ago is that I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer so I want to surround myself with people that are smarter than I am. So that’s the reason that I have Diana and Matt and everyone else,” Springer said when asked why he decided to hire Widler as an intern. “When Waylon came in he was going to be a senior in high school and he was very professional, had a great resume, [and] letter of introduction. His resume was very impressive for someone who was just coming out of 11th grade. When I was his age the only thing I was thinking about was what girl I was going to date the next week and trying to get out of school and being with the guys and playing sports. So, it’s amazing when you find someone sharp like that. You want them to be around and the goal with him was to help him learn something about what we do and why we do things differently and the reason we are so successful.” And it seems, according to Widler, the Springer team has been more than successful.
“Mr. Springer definitely does things differently,” Widler said. “The way he talks to clients and gets to know them. The difference between him and big firms I could have worked for is that they wouldn’t be as personal with their clients. They wouldn’t care about their clients as much and they’d probably be more worried about the commission than the success of a client.” Currently, Widler is in his senior year at Weatherford High School and has dreams of going to Rice University. He is also on the high school baseball team. When he gets to college, Waylon plans on getting his degree in international business and marketing. As for how he feels about his time at Springer Financial Services?
“I’m really glad that I saw the sign for his office and I walked in there to talk to him.” 107
