Like many who loved Jeri’s sweets,
Jamie was also spoiled by the owner’s
humor, often revealed on her business
sign. Sayings like “Now offering free
aroma therapy,” and, “We’re all
‘bout dat cake, ‘bout dat cake, no
veggies,” were good pick-me-ups for
passersby when time didn’t permit a
treat. The last glimpse of humor Jamie
caught before taking up the spatula,
however, didn’t evoke laughter. Quite
to the point, the sign read, “Roses are
red. I’m tired as hell. It’s been fu n.
Bakery for sale.”
Recalling a light conversation she
had with Jeri on buying the bakery
a year prior, the joke wasn’t funny
anymore. Jamie couldn’t let the
kitchen lights dim.
“When I saw it for sale, something
in me said, ‘We need to do this,’”
Jamie said. Speaking plurals on

bit of her money.
“Jamie is very persuasive, and
there is nothing that Jamie sees that
she doesn’t think she can do,” Amy
said, laughing between words.
As the two hung up, Erin called.
Fate.
Looking for a change of pace from
the corporate life, Erin bought into the
plan with little convincing.
The same day, the three
approached Jeri about purchasing the
bakery, only to learn they were one of
10 groups to make an offer. After six
potential buyers dropped out, the trio
remained in line and was eventually
pushed to the front per the owners’
wishes. She saw something in them –
something she never had over her six
years in business – a support network.
“Jeri said that she chose us
because we’re a team of three,”
Jamie said. “[Like] her sign said, ‘She
was tired as hell.’ She knew it was
labor intensive. ... So, Jeri thought
that because there was three of us,
