Education and Mathews Archery in
2001. Although the program began
in the United States, it has reached
across the world.
Tournaments are held at the state,
national and world levels, and Brock
has participated in tournaments at
each of these with its four-year-old
program.
Brock Archery Team Coach Kelly
McDonald is extremely proud of
the success Brock ISD students have
found.
“This will be our fourth year,”
McDonald said. “The second year I
started helping with the team and we
went to state and nationals. … We
had nine seniors on the team, and I
really pushed for us to go to world.”
The world competition that year
was held in Wisconsin. The team
didn’t score as well as they would
have hoped, but it was a great
experience for the kids, McDonald
said.
Last year, Brock Archery Team
had qualifiers at the high school
and elementary levels for state and
national tournaments.
The program was brought to Brock
by BISD School Board President
Bill Cooper through the agriculture
program and wildlife classes at Brock
High School, but it has since been
expanded to include elementary
school students.
According to NASP rules, the
teams must practice at least part of
the time during the regular school
day at each campus represented. The
different age groups also practice
before and after school in their indoor
range, originally dedicated to batting
cages at the junior high campus.
McDonald, a NASP-certified level
two instructor, is assisted by several
parents, eight of which have also
become NASP-certified.
At a typical tournament, archers
shoot from two distances. They have
one practice round and then three
scoring rounds. A round consists of
shooting five arrows at the target.
After completing the first challenge
at 10 meters, the targets are moved
to 15 meters and competitors begin
again. Thirty scoring arrows are shot
by each, all aiming for a perfect score
of 300 points. One of BHS’s team
members, junior Colton Rody, has
