He volunteers for the Lion’s Club, assisting with welding projects and repairing homes. He has even participated in a national project for the Lion’s Club, collecting
used eyeglasses for those who can’t afford to buy glasses.
Penny also volunteers with the Center of Hope.
During Belle’s retirement she started baking treats to
share with residents of nursing homes. She volunteers her
crocheting for the North Side Baptist Church Happy Hats,
where they crochet hats for cancer patients and infants.
“When my grandchild was born … she said they put
a little cap on them … Well they tied their name into it,
and wrote a little prayer for it and tied it into the cap, it
was one of mother’s caps,” said Sandi, one of Belle and
Penny’s daughters.
“We try to stay active,” Penny said.
They are active members of North Side Baptist Church
in Weatherford. They have 20 grandchildren and 30
great-grandchildren.
Their advice for young couples just starting their lives
together is to put God first in your lives and give, because
being married is a give and take situation.
“It’s better to give than to get, and it’s better to forgive
and to forget than it is to take a grudge,” Penny said.
On Saturday, June 20, the couple’s children hosted a
reception in their honor at North Side Baptist Church.
Belle says that they love each other more now than
when they married 75 years ago.
