Penny and Belle – 70th anniversary OCTOBER 2015 PA R K E R C O U N T Y T O D AY married at the time was 21 – Penny was 19 years old and had to have his mother sign for him. Belle was 18, which made her of legal age, meaning she could do her own signing.  A young woman who once had an eye for Penny stopped them on 28 the way to the courthouse to get their license, and told them that their marriage would never l ast because they were too young.  “We’re still waiting any day for us to break up,” Belle said laughing. “That was 75 years ago.”  After the ceremony, Belle’s boss drove the newlyweds and their mutual friend around town, honking the horn in celebration.
