OCTOBER 2015
those uniforms with skirts. They
did look nice. The waitresses
one day asked my parents if they
could switch to wearing pants.
My father would not budge. He
said, ‘Absolutely not. They look
very nice and professional wearing
their uniforms.’ One day, not long
after, the waitresses all showed
up in mini-skirts. My dad was just
appalled and then as he watched
them run around the tables in
those short skirts, one of the waitresses went to clean off a table and
she bent way over and my father
took one look at that and stormed
out of the café. He went home and
he told my mother, ‘You tell those
girls that they can wear pants, but I
don’t want to ever see any of them
in mini-skirts again — ever.’”
The restaurant has always been
a favorite of truck drivers.
“I don’t know how many waitresses we’ve lost over the years to
truck drivers,” Fletcher said. “The
little waitress in the mini-skirt who
cleaned the table and finally got
my dad to let the waitresses wear
pants to work? Well, she ended up
running off with one of the truck
drivers. You know what? They live
in Azle and they’re still happily
married.”
Most of the success of the café
has been attributed to the charming, witty personality of Miss
Dorothy.
“I wish you could meet my
grandmother,” Buffington said.
Still fondly recalled by long-time
Springtown residents, Dorothy
Howell was known affectionately
as, “The Godfather of Springtown.”
“People would line up just to
get a hug from her,” Buffington
recalled. Even though she’s no
longer there, the restaurant is one
of those rare businesses where
people come to have good, traditional Texas fare, in a warm,
charming atmosphere, served by
folks that know everybody’s name.
They ask you how you are and
stop to hear how you answer. In
a very nice way, Dorothy and
Claude are still around.
