PARKER COUNTY AG LOGAN ANd miNNiE, GOiNG fOR ThE GOLd LOGAN PRATER BY CHRISTINA LOVELESS Logan Prater is a sophomore at Brock High School and a part of her school’s FFA program. Logan shows two pigs, Minnie Pearl and Ida Faye, both of which Logan named for sentimental reasons. “I named [her Minnie Pearl] because of my great grandma, who raised Durocs,” Logan said, adding that Ida Faye was another one of her grandmothers. The Duroc pig is an older breed of American domestic pig that forms the basis for numerous mixed-breed commercial hogs. Duroc pigs are red, large-framed, medium length, and muscular, with partially drooping ears. They’re great pigs for young stock show enthusiasts because they tend to be one of the least aggressive of the swine breeds. They also have an excellent rate of gain. The first pig to have its genome sequenced was a female Duroc named T.J. Tabasco. Logan does have other interests outside of FFA. Prater is in the top five percent of her class also known as “Top Scholars.” Logan is also on her school’s tennis team, as well as the student council. This summer at the Parker County Youth Livestock Show, Logan won reserve York with her pig Minnie. After high school, Logan plans on studying at Texas A&M University, with the goal of Veterinary Medicine because of her love for animals. Logan’s goals for her sophomore year are to be as involved in FFA as possible and competing in all the Major shows.
