knowledge of the Dachshund testing
positive for heart worms.
“It didn’t matter to me; she’s light
heart worm positive so she just needs
the monthly pill.” Nikki said. “In fact,
it’s no trouble at all.”
Nikki took her home, and
renamed her “Winnie” after
Halloween villain Winifred Sanderson
from “Hocus Pocus”.
Now on antibiotics, Winnie
enjoys a normal life. She often roosts
on the back of the couch for naps.
When that’s not enough, she moves
to Nikki’s shoulder. She has also
mastered the art of chasing Nikki’s
kids, for play of course. Winnie has
three fur-siblings, two Catahoulas
named Buster and Gabby and a mutt
named Molly. Although she is still
adjusting, Winnie’s demeanor is
electric.
“She’s really sweet, really loving.”
Nikki said.
Ill animals are not uncommon
at WPCAS, but adopters looking to
save at-risk lives also frequent the
shelter. The exchange of hope is
mutual though. Dogs like Chip and
Winnie are rescued only to return
the love to their new masters with
companionship.
