“It’s all about giving back, there [are]
really no winners and no losers, really,” she continued.
Riders in cutting horse competitions select a single calf from a small
herd and guide it into the center
of the arena. With sharp turns and
abrupt starts and stops, the horses
work the calf and keep it from escaping back into the herd. Cutting has an
origin in the Old West, where ranchers used the cutting horses to separate
individual cattle and move them into
corrals or pens. Cutting horses were
also used during cattle drives to form
the cattle into a herd and move them
from place to place. During competitions, the horse and ride r work
as a team and have two and a half
minutes to separate one calf from the
larger herd. Performance is judged
by the activity of the calf, which is
chosen by the rider and cannot be
changed without a penalty. More
than one animal may be cut during
the rider’s turn. 
After the Cutting Competition, a
concert will be held at the Round
Up Inn adjacent to Will Rogers starring many of the country music stars
mentioned before including Tucker,
Lovett, Walker, Willmon and Burgess. 
Dinner will be served and guests
can bid on fantastic items in the
auction to raise additional funds to
help with Careity’s mission. 
The Careity Foundation hosts
several events every year, one of
which is Careity Rocks.  
Over the years, over $7 million
has been raised through the foundation for patient care to fund mammograms, biopsies, chaplain and counseling services, medical massage and
acupuncture services. They even
supply patients with gas cards to
help them afford to drive to and from
their treatments. Careity Foundation
is dedicated to providing on-site
services for cancer patients in an
oncology setting for economicallychallenged cancer patients as well as
early cancer detection for both men
and women in North Texas.
