the passenger , who refused to leave the plane he was on simply because he ’ d purchased a ticket . Mr . Munoz referred to his brutal removal from the plane as , “ re-accommodating the customers ,” because the flight was overbooked ( turns out it wasn ’ t overbooked , United wanted the seats for four crew-members to use so they could work on another flight ). Mr . Munoz then sent an email to his staff , commending the crew ’ s actions for following established procedures , and referring to Dr . Dao as “ disruptive ” and “ belligerent .”
After people took to social media and voiced their view of the whole incident and criticized Mr . Munoz for his cavalier attitude toward Dr . Dao ’ s treatment ( not to mention that United ’ s stock had plummeted ), the CEO issued an apology and promised that this type of incident would never happen again on a United Airlines flight . He said , “ No one should ever be mistreated this way .” His sincerity was touching . Mr . Munoz sounded like a pre-pubescent boy who was caught stealing cigarettes . He showed not an ounce of regret that he and his employees had behaved badly , but rather showed plenty of regret over his company ’ s plummeting stock prices .
The terrorist attacks of 9 / 11 resulted in the expansion of authority of airline employees . That was done in an effort to make flying safer for passengers and flight crews . It ’ s doubtful that anyone planned the widespread abuse of power that manifested itself aboard Flight 3411 . Was the 69-year-old doctor a threat to anyone ’ s security aboard Flight 3411 ? Unlikely .
Ultimately , who will pay for this appalling incident ? In the end , no doubt , the money will come out of the pockets of members of America ’ s traveling public , by way of increasing fares . Will their overall traveling experience improve ? What are the odds ?
