Plowman’s protectiveness of the
building is not just about his life experiences but those of the community.
“It not only has history for my
family, but for thousands of other
families that have gone to church
there or attended services for a friend
or loved one there. It’s a part of the
community, in my mind. That structure evokes very deep emotions in
people, whether it’s as a funeral home
or a church,” he stated.
Plowman’s daughter Misty Engel
agrees. The third generation of Plowmans working in the building, she
serves as public relations specialist.
And like her father before her, she too
grew up around the storied building.
“This is all I’ve known my whole
life,” she said. “At one point we actually lived above the funeral home
in the apartment. There are a lot of
memories there. Anyone who has
been in our chapel knows the beauty
of it. It is so unique. Everything about
this building holds a story.”
Engel knows firsthand about
the deep connections people have
formed with the place over the years.
