while the district courts have exclusive jurisdiction over felony crimes.
This week, for example, I presided
over a criminal jury trial, a nonjury
trial terminating parental rights and a
summary judgment hearing, in addition to about a dozen divorces and
numerous other matters that were
before the court.
Q. What is your favorite book?
A. Really hard to pick a favorite.
Maybe The Complete Works of
William Shakespeare? I love Go
Rin No Sho, A Book of Five Rings,
by Miyamoto Mushashi. I’ve read
Christopher McDougall’s Born to
Run probably five or six times. I was
fascinated by Empire of the Summer
Moon, by S.C. Gwynne. There’s a
nifty little book called Her Ladyship’s
Guide to the Queen’s English, and
I’m currently reading Samuel White
Baker’s Wild Beasts and Their Ways:
Reminiscences of Europe, Asia, and
North America, Vol. 1.
Q. What is your favorite movie?
A. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Q. What kind of music are you into?
A. Just about everything. Classical;
old, old country music: Jimmie
Rogers (yes, with yodeling), Hank
Williams, Bob Wills (still the king);
Elvis, Bob Dylan; blues, hard
rock, metal. The new alt stuff that
my daughter listens to is pretty
good. Seriously, almost everything. I
can even stand rap sometimes.
Q. What accomplishment are you
most proud of?
A. Raising two brilliant, delightful
• Commercial
• Apartments
• Residential
• Move-Outs
• Carpets
“Let us take the stress out of the mess.”

Q. What’s the most daring thing
you’ve ever done?
A. Either setting off for San Francisco
between my second and third years
of college back in 1978 or teaching
English in Pusan, Korea, in 1988-89.

Q. If you were to write a book, what
would you call it and what would it
be about?
A. 19.01, which is the penal code
section for homicide. It would be
about a Texas Ranger working to
solve a series of seemingly random
killings in North Texas.
