fashion and we proceeded to dig in. We first noticed that each sandwich
came with a pickle spear and an olive perched on a toothpick. The BLT
was so overflowing with bacon I was stunned, speechless, enamored. It
wasn’t just strips of bacon, but crunchy pieces so plentiful they could not
be contained by the bread. I was in heaven.
I wanted my companions to see, but they were already elbow-deep in
their sandwiches and couldn’t be distracted.
For dessert I enjoyed a very delicious brownie and my companions
had the tasty cookies, a fitting end to an enjoyable midday meal.
Yesterday’s owners Debbie and Jeff Hicks moved to Parker County
more than 20 years ago to raise their family and put down roots.
Yesterday’s opened in Weatherford in 1990 and was purchased by
the Hicks in 2003. Keeping the shop on York Avenue, they moved to
their current location in 2011 from a smaller space up the street. It is a
nice change from the cookie-cutter sandwich stores and every customer
is made to feel welcome.
Yesterday’s Sandwich Shop offers lunch delivery and has a pleasant
environment, like an oasis amid a hectic work day. Lunch at Yesterday’s
was enjoyable and I’ll return frequently.

MARCH 2016
Along with two companions, I ventured out
to Yesterday’s Sandwich Shop for lunch on a
Tuesday morning. It was still pretty early for
the noon meal but we were all immediately
impressed by the number of people eating
there already.
We looked over the menu posted on the
wall to choose our lunch fare.
The choices are soup, salad and sandwiches, along with several dessert options.
We each chose a brown bag special that
includes a full sandwich, chips and a cookie
or brownie for dessert.
First, you choose your bag of chips and
dessert before ordering at the counter. This
gives you an opportunity to choose the size
of cookie or brownie you want, and it makes
your mouth water. I was tempted to “eat
dessert first,” but (just barely) managed to
contain myself.
Behind the counter you see a dozen or
so people working hard at different tasks and
a smiling face asks what you would like to
order.
I opted for the Bacon-Lettuce-Tomato
Sandwich and both my companions chose
the Chicken Salad Sandwich. Both were
proclaimed to be “the Bomb.”
Each sandwich is carefully made with
fresh house-made sourdough bread baked
that day. The older a sourdough bread starter
is, the better the bread’s flavor. Yesterday’s
starter is at least 15 years old, and possibly
older. The bread is beyond good. If you have
never had freshly baked sourdough bread,
you’re missing out. After ordering lunch we
chose a table and then we filled our iced-tea
glasses from the multitude of flavor choices.
The décor is modern western, wooden
tables, concrete floors and exceptionally
clean.
Our lunch was soon delivered to our
table by a friendly food runner in a timely
