CHARLEY VAN NEWKIRK
BY KATIE RODGERS
A
Weatherford Christian School sixth-grader, Charley Van
Newkirk has been showing livestock for the past six years.
With a family that has been in the business even longer, she
was basically born into the world of showing.
She is currently an officer in Spring Creek 4-H and has one
pig, Pedro, which she plans to compete with at the Parker
County Livestock show. Charley has won several awards
throughout her career including Grand Champion, Supreme
Grand, Grand Champion Hampshire, and she has attended
auctions every year since six years back when she began. She
barrel races with her Palomino, Bronze Boot in Oklahoma
City, Waco, Glen Rose, Azle, Springtown, Weatherford and
even California. In the future, Charley hopes to get through her
college years by showing.
“I want to show a steer, maybe next year, and eventually get
a scholarship for showing,” she told PCT.
Charley’s favorite thing about showing are the friends she
makes along the way, as well as attending the rodeo every year.
When asked what advice she had for others looking into the
showing business she answered, “… Do your best and if you
fail or don’t make auction one year, you can always make it the
next year.”
Though she hasn’t made any concrete plans for college,

Charley knows showing is something she wants
to continue doing as long as she can. She
would like to be either a volleyball coach or an
Ag teacher someday.
