half-singing, half-talking thing.  “Jerry Lee Lewis came out and Jerry Lee had his sister with him on this tour. He played piano with his feet and his elbow, he was kind of a clown on piano, but he put on a really good show. Everybody enjoyed it.  “Then, Bill Mack came out and said, ‘Now, ladies and gentlemen, I want you all to put your hands together and give a warm round of applause to the soul of country, Charlie Pride. I was playing lead guitar and my brother was playing bass. This black dude came out on stage. I looked at my brother and said, ‘Oh, my God!’ He was doing a tune called, Little Eliza Jane. I knew the song. I said to my brother, ‘This song has 16 bars of yodeling in it. He can’t do this. He’s black. He can’t yodel. No way is he going to yodel.’ Then Charlie started singing and he was so country. I quit playing and just stood there with my mouth open. After the yodel, I had an eight-bar pickup, behind his solo, but I was just standing there and my brother said, ‘Raymond, pick it up, pick it up!’ I started playing.  “When we finished, we took a break and we went back stage. I said to Charlie Pride, ‘Charlie, how in the world did you ever start singing country?’ He said, ‘Raymond, I’ve always loved country, but my first love was baseball and I would go to Florida and practice with the Rangers every summer. But, I was never good enough. So I went into the country music business.’”  1304 Mineral Wells Highway • Weatherford, TX 76086 817-599-7680 • General Healthcare • Emergency and Critical Care • Advanced and Routine Surgery • Complete In-House Laboratory • Advanced Dental Procedures • Laser Therapy • Ultrasound • Endoscopy Doctor and staff on premise 24 hours daily for Emergencies and Critical Care.
