spoons, knives and forks. “Those
turned out really good. I liked those,”
she said. She describes her style as
“earthy.”
Art can be cathartic, an emotional
or even spiritual experience. Art is
many things to many people, both artists and audience.
“Anytime I sculpt or paint or
anything, it’s, like, so relieving … It’s,
like, a total stress reliever for me,”
Emma said. Asked what someone 16
years old has to be stressed about, the
young artist replied with a dubious
“What?” It was the kind of “What?”
one gets when one has asked a dumb
question.
Emma’s 11-year-old brother
Bennett does not share big sister’s
fascination with or enjoyment of art.
“He is very against coloring in the
lines,” she said emphatically, “very
against coloring altogether. When his
teacher told him to color, he looked
at her and told her that if she wanted
it colored she should have printed it
out in color. He is very much against
the whole concept of art, much to my
dismay.” Ah … stress.
Emma is not afraid to follow her
artistic vision into unusual places. Her
“paper towns” project involves an old
chest.
“Yeah, it was an old wooden
chest my art teacher had,” Emma
explained, “and I thought it would
be cool to build a little city inside of
it… .”
The chest city is made from various materials; styrofoam for hills and
a gritty glue-sand mixture to cover
t hem, moss for grass and treetops.
The city’s houses are made of poster
board, foam board and paper.
“And each little house has a balloon light inside, so when you turn
them all on it looks like the city is
glowing,” Emma added. A nice touch.
She is always thinking and carries a
notebook for jotting down “out-ofthe-blue” ideas, concepts or epiphanies as she gets them.
Though young, the burgeoning
sculptress has thought enough about
art to answer the “What-role-does-artplay-in-society?” question.
“It’s to make them [viewers of art]
think,” she said. “… And it’s a legacy
that we leave behind.”
The great artists and great art
