cattle and cowboys all were,” said
Saunders. “This county was founded
on horse breeding. The cattle and
cowboy source was in Parker County.
The ranches all got interested in
having a good horse and the NCHA
started growing. Dad would send out
a letter about once a month to all of
the members. He’d send me to the
mailbox to mail them off. I remember
one of the first ones I mailed off said,
’Boys, we’re really doing good. We’re
up to 32 members now.’”
Ray Smyth of Aledo was the first
president of the NCHA.
