when asked if he plans to take up his dad’s work as a career. “I’ll
always have horses, because I like them,” he said. “But I don’t
know if I’m gonna like do full-blast horse training. I will be training
some horses when I get older.” Like Jerrad, he plans to be certified
in welding.
Dittmer’s thoughts on his sons following his career path factor in
the inherent danger involved.
“You know, I don’t know,” he said. “I mean they are, kinda,
so far. It’s pretty dangerous,
you know. If they want to do
it, I’ll show them how. If they
are going to do it, I’d just as
soon they learn it from me.
I don’t mean to brag or anything like that, but there are
darn few people my age [47]
who are still riding colts. Most
guys, they don’t last very long
because they get broke up,
you know. Riding these rough
horses at my age... . It’s tricky
and you can’t take any chances. It’s a wonder I’m still in one
piece.”
In his line of work, anything
can happen. In fact, about a
year ago Dittmer was hurt on a
cutting horse.
“It’s just a matter of time,”
he said. “It’s not if, it’s when. I imagine one day
a horse will come over on me and mash the crap
out of me and that’ll be the end of it... . I don’t
have a death wish, and I don’t take a lot of dumb
chances, but I figure if I can’t ride I don’t want
to be alive anyway. I’ll probably ride ‘til I die,
maybe not some of these rough horses. Some of
these horses don’t need to be rode anyway.”
