According to Aledo Head Golf Coach Greg Nelson,
Cheyenne is the first individual champion Aledo has ever
had for golf. Over the past two years she won 13 tournaments individually including district championships,
regional championships and back to back state championships. Few can boast of back-to-back championships
and only one other female golfer can say she won the 4A
championship one year and the 5A championship the next
year like Cheyenne did.
“She is the most intense person on the golf course
that I’ve been around. She has a really sweet personality, but when she gets on the golf course, she turns on the
intensity. She’s a great teammate, a great kid and has the
best leadership qualities I’ve had since I’ve been coaching
golf,” said Nelson.
Cheyenne moved to the Aledo area during her sophomore year, but was homeschooled so she could attend
golf tournaments around the country. “I traveled a lot
with golf that year and didn’t want to have to worry about
missing school,” she said. She began attending Aledo
high school the next year. “I like the school a lot. I like
the people there. All my best friends are on the golf team.
I like how Aledo is really into sports a lot. The whole
community comes out to support the teams,” she continued.
“Every school record we had has fallen over the last
two years. She had seven rounds this year in the 60s and
ended up with a 68.8 average,” Nelson continued. “She
broke her own record of a 65 then went back and broke it
again with a 63 twice,” said Nelson. “For her to win individually and go back-to-back at state is amazing,” he said.
The state championship was really the fulfillment of a
dream for Cheyenne. “It was definitely my goal. The first
time it was awesome. I played really well my junior year.
All season this year was to win regional and state like last
year. That’s what I was working for every day,” she said.
Along with her high school tournaments, she has
traveled to play in Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon, North
Carolina and Arizona. The Polo Golf Rankings is the
system of the American Junior Golf Association to identify
and rank the top junior players who have competed in
the premier junior golf tournaments in the US. Currently
Cheyenne is ranked 23 in the US and she finished 10th in
the last AJGA Tournaments she participated in.
Cheyenne said about golf, “I like the challenge of it.
It has a lot of different components to it. You have to
always be positive. It’s about perseverance. You can get
better every day. It shows your character.” She practices
three to four hours daily, playing nine or 18 holes, or she
works on specific skills. “I hit balls, putt or chip, and then
will play a couple of holes to practice,” she said.
Cheyenne Knight will be attending the University of
Alabama on a full golf scholarship. Cheyenne said, “I’m
so excited. I’ve waited a long time. I committed when I
was a sophomore. I’m looking forward to the golf team.
I want to learn a lot and improve as a player. Have the
whole college experience.” She will live on campus and
share a room with three other athletes. “I look forward to
meeting them and learning about their sports,” she continued.
Golf Coach Nelson finished by saying, “Alabama is
getting a good one.”
