V . A . Littleton Art Award — Rachel Durbin
Rachel Durbin has been drawing since she can remember . “ I started out with horses and I just kept going from there ,” she said .
She is currently an art history major , focusing on storytelling in art through the ages . She attended the University of North Texas , but will start at Arizona State online this semester through the Starbucks College Achievement Program . “ I am studying to become a teacher , but aside from that , I am happy as a barista .”
Rachel loves to give back to her community with her art . “ Whenever I see someone fall in love with one of my paintings or drawings , I feel I have found my purpose . I ’ m always meeting new people and hopefully brightening their days . I ’ m also very into the preservation of the environment , so I ’ m constantly looking for new ways to recycle and conserve ,” she said .
Durbin is blessed to have so many people who have given her something unique to strive for . She credits her family , friends and teachers , all of whom have shaped the young woman she is today . They lead by example , encouraging her to be kinder , more patient , and by helping her zoom in on specific creative skills . She is overcoming her challenges by facing them head-on with her positive attitude .
