Wolters sprawled to take in the original town site of Rock Creek .
The long-gone community we have been revisiting is by a few sources referred to as Rock Creek South — another Rock Creek ( Rock Creek North ) existed farther north on Rock Creek , also along the Parker- Palo Pinto county line . It was not mining , but proximity to the Fort Worth-Fort Belknap Military Road that caused this settlement to flourish . In Northwest Parker County , this military road roughly followed today ’ s Farm-to-Market Road 1885 , crossing now-U . S . Highway 281 into Palo Pinto County and continuing on west along what is now State Highway 254 through Salesville towards Graford .
A stage stop established on the Military Road in the 1880s drew settlers to the area where , roughly , Highway 1885 crosses Highway 281 . Settlers founded Rock Creek Baptist Church ( today called Rock Creek Road Baptist Church ) in 1884 and Rock Creek Cemetery is one of the few extant reminders of this once-upon-a-time town . The earliest marked grave fixes the final resting place of one Bertie Ladd ( 1885- 1896 ). Rock Tank School was named for a nearby solid-rock pool .
Stagecoaches , wagon trains , cattle drovers , soldiers and travelers kept Mr . Dave Lamkin busy as he owned the livery stable , blacksmith shop and hotel .
As mentioned in the first installment of this series , this is the area where cattleman Marcus Dalton met his bloody end when 30-40 fuming Indians sprang from behind a fallen oak tree along the trail and laid waste to Dalton ’ s party . There was no love in Loving Valley on that day , Nov . 8 , 1870 .
