But at Vintage we’re a craft cocktail bar, so it’s different. Here you can get drinks that you can’t get anywhere else. I want people to realize that alcohol is not necessarily a negative thing. It can be like an educational experience, too, while enjoying a beverage. Instead of going to the river and drinking like 25 Coors Lights you can come here and have two really nice cocktails and learn more about how vodka is made.” All of her bartenders are knowledgeable about the many types of liquor they carry as well as different vodkas and whiskeys. To MacRae and her co-workers, it’s important that their customers know about the alcohol they are served. “It’s not like the therapy aspect of bartending where you come and drink your worries away. It’s more like learning about something you don’t already know about,” she explained. At Vintage they pride themselves on knowing their customers. “That’s my favorite thing about it [Vintage]. The employees, the family and the customers. We have a really good return rate and I really think it’s because of the alcohol and the quality of our bartenders.” They make it a point to try and remember customer names and what they like to drink. “We pride ourselves on knowing and being personal with our customers and that in turn makes it a more family environment. We want you to be comfortable with us. Get to know you, your family,” MacRae said. “We wanted to make the bar a friendly environment and we can identify about 70 percent of our customers if not by name then by face. It makes the job easier because you’re hanging out with friends your whole shift and the customers are great.” While Vintage may be her last stop before starting a new path, she definitely appreciates the family she has created for herself while working there. “The staff is amazing and I’ve never been so happy at a restaurant,” she said. “And most of the people I work with think the same thing.” 79
