JULY 2016 PA R K E R C O U N T Y T O D AY The restoration of the house took about two years and it was a major undertaking, but they had a great many hands to aid them with the new home. “We went through two or three contractors but then ended up with a man my kids liked to call Father Jim. He was a character,” Hale said. With the house underway, the stories and the people that came through left a mark on Hale. Everything had its own story. The spiral staircase was one of them. “We had a young man who was about 31 and he was a Messianic Jew. He had escaped from Czechoslovakia. He’d guarded Saddam and he spoke five different languages. He’d gotten an illness from a bombing and he was an inhalation therapist over in Hurst. He’d gotten sick and his wife and he divorced. That devastated him,” Hale explained. “His little girl lived here so he wanted to be as close as possible to her. So one of our friends called us and asked if we’d consider letting a man named David live in our house. We said we would take him out to eat and see what we 72 thought.” Since the house wasn’t finished the Hales worried he’d be upset with sleeping in a different room every month, but welcoming him into their home, according to Hale, “was the most wonderful gift to us.” They gave him room and board to help him so he could pay child support. While he lived there, David did the entire stairwell. “You can imagine all the spindles. Each one needed a coat of paint. He cleared all of them and sanded and prepared it for the contractors.
