Aquatred, a hydrotherapy method, is a rehabilitation tool used to help injured horses or horses that have undergone surgery heal. (It is also used for general toning and fitness.) Though in fairly wide use, it is not new. “It started out in Southern California. It was a veterinarian that built it,” Campbell said. “And that was probably back in the mid-’60s or early ’70s. That’s the first time I heard of it. It was more for racehorses back then, because they wanted to get those horses healed up faster so they could get back on the track.” As with everything else, the technology involved continued to improve, as did therapy efficiency. But the human element cannot be discounted. “The key to the whole thing really is you’ve got to have the people behind it that kinda know horses. It’s not just a ‘piece of cake’ to lead a horse into the water and put him on the treadmill … you [can’t] think they’re gonna just start walking,” Campbell said. “You’ve got to have a little savvy to you to understand how to get them in. You might have to lower that water down a few times just to get them used to it before you even turn the treadmill on.” In other words: a keen grasp of horse psychology and behavior goes a long way. According to Campbell, Aquatred therapy’s success is undeniable. “The therapy part with the spa and Aquatred, it cuts your [rehab] time a good 50-60 percent [compared] to just doing stall rest or hand walking,” Campbell said. “So it’s very beneficial … especially for, like, cutters who spend $50-$60,000 for a horse. If it gets injured and is a young horse, they want to get it healed up and back going again so they can get more money on it. Same thing with team ropers and barrel racers.” Aquatreds are used primarily for competitive equines, animals bred and trained to “bring home the 31
