Cartwright Park in her honor. A
newspaper article quotes Cartwright
as saying, “I’m real proud of the parks
because the citizens have done them.
Everything has been a community
effort and has been paid for by the
community.” Another article lists her
nine “wants" for nine different city
parks, with those additions including
a pump, fencing, bike paths and trees
for shade. Cartwright died in 2003.
Drew Springer served on the
Weatherford City Council when
Soldier Spring Park was dedicated
and knew Grace Cartwright most
of his life. “Grace Cartwright was
my Sunday School teacher as a little
boy. She always loved kids,” he said.
The asphalt trails were put in when
the park was created. “We wanted
people to walk through the park and
ride through the park — to enjoy it,”
he added. Grace Cartwright talked
to the Council about the park, and
she said that she wanted everyone
to enjoy it whether it was walkers or
bicyclers. “She was never anti-kids
or anti-bikes,” he remembered. She
raised funds for the parks because she
believed in their importance. “She
was a big contributor to charitable
things. That’s what charitable people
do. They give back to things they
care about. She was on the park
board and was always pro-parks. If
there was a baseball park, she wanted
kids to use it. And I never knew her
not to get her way,” Springer said.
Friends of the Beauty Way (FBW)
members have referred to Grace Cartwright’s work in conservation when
opposing any changes to Soldier
Spring Park, although they said they
“don’t remember her personally.”
