Don Newton
Don is the president of Cornerstone Diversified Industries , maker of The Super Cane by night , and in his day job he is a physical therapist .
PCT : How did you get into your occupation ? DN : I ’ ve been in physical therapy for 17 years and it stemed from a desire to help people . Out of high school , I was drawn to the stability of the medical field , though writing has always been my passion / gifting . In college , my academic adviser suggested volunteering at an outpatient rehab in Abilene . The physical therapists there were just cool . They were funny , positive and intelligent — part motivator , part teacher , and part physician . I decided to be a PT after witnessing a brown-haired toddler with cerebral palsy take his first steps . His mom and therapist wept with joy and we all hugged . I was hooked . I needed passive income , and the basic idea for the The Super Cane was birthed ; but it wasn ’ t until I met Gary Overcash that it became a reality . We incorporated our parent company , CDI .
PCT : What is your favorite novel ? DN : Probably The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn . I ’ m more interested in non-fiction than novels . I write more than I read , strangely .
PCT : What do you do to decompress ? DN : Overall , writing is very cathartic for me and helps me chill — until it doesn ’ t . My Jeep Wrangler TJ really de-stresses me ( when it runs ). My parents ’ ranch in McGirk is truly a holy place for me . When I turn onto FM 1047 , I literally begin to feel tension in my neck release and my heart rate slows down . Watching Lily play volleyball is also a way to chill .
PCT : What is something people don ’ t know about you ? DN : I want to try standup comedy at some point . It ’ s on my bucket list . No family / friends allowed at the open mic night when it happens . I probably won ’ t even tell them when I do it . I ’ ll just be like , “ I ’ m going to Dallas for something . Don ’ t wait up and don ’ t follow me .” Susan and the kids are the funniest people I know . It ’ d be hard with them in the crowd .
PCT : What would you most like to be remembered for ? DN : I want to be remembered for being an encourager . For someone with a spirit of encouragement , there ’ s probably nothing more awesome than someone you ’ ve helped / encouraged / instructed superseding you . Aside from that , I have a dream of seeing Lester Bower posthumously exonerated in my lifetime .
PCT : If you could have lunch with anyone from history , either living or dead , who would it be ? DN : It depends . Living I ’ d love to
