our pets: DOG RESCUE Daisy’s Rescue With a little help from her friends, Daisy’s journey ended and she found her forever home get Daisy help. “I’ve always heard very good things about their [Weatherford/Parker County Animal Shelter] expertise and care for animals, so I went ahead and committed to taking her over there,” Laurence said. When Laurence brought Daisy into the WPCAS, he and Daisy were met with quick care. “I can’t say enough about the hospitality and the staff over at the Weatherford/Parker County Animal Shelter. I can’t commend the shelter enough for their concern about animals,” he said. Jackie Ortiz, senior veterinarian technician at WPCAS described Daisy’s bleak condition. “She was pretty bad; she was in shock, she had been hit by a car, and we didn’t know the severity of her injuries because we do not have an x-ray machine, but we were able to get her x-rays through a local vet who By ETHAN EVANS Daisy J 94 ames Herriot said it best, “Animals are unpredictable things, and so our life is unpredictable. It’s a long tale of little triumphs and little disasters and you’ve got to really like it to stick to it.” It was a late afternoon, weekday traffic was fast- moving, mindless driving, and all of a sudden — lives were changed. Hank Laurence, veteran, owner/operator of Combat Customs 22, and a Weatherford local, was travel- ing along I-20, as were Davin and Heather Moore of Alvarado, when out of nowhere, traffic suddenly slowed. As they approached the scene, both Laurence and Davin pulled their vehicles to the shoulder of a busy highway and sprang into action. Two full-sized dogs had bolted across the highway, both struck by oncoming traffic, one a blue heeler (Daisy) and another, which was an instant fatality. As Daisy was struggling to move, scared and broken, Laurence and Davin disregarded their own risk to save the injured animal. “She was trying to get off of the street, because her back legs were knocked out from underneath her,” Davin said.
