Cancer and Love: Love Until It Hurts “There is nothing more important to me as a physician than your cancer treatment. I’ve been in practice for nearly two decades and have had the privilege of telling many patients that there is life beyond cancer. As president of The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, I want to lead by example, practicing a firm belief that all patients should receive the finest medical care available, with the same concern and compassion as a cherished member of the family.” Ray Page, D.O., Ph.D. President and Medical Oncologist The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Schedule appointments by calling 817-596-0637 or online at www.thecentertx.com Support services sponsored by: It is often said that one of the first places cancer spreads is to the loved ones. Even in the most solid and committed relationships a diagnosis of cancer can create substantial challenges. People with cancer can often feel alone and not understood while at the same time, the spouses can feel helpless and unsure of what to say and do. Just getting through normal day to day life, even with a great partner, can be difficult with many hurdles. Then, all of a sudden, cancer enters the picture and now life is turned upside down, and even threatened. Stress, from all fronts, can be insurmountable and communication can become strained. Cancer and its treatment can result in substantial physical changes. Deformity and permanent changes can occur which can impact basic functionality, including taste, swallowing, breathing, ambulation, and bowel/bladder function. Patients can further be impacted by significant psychological changes. The uncertainty of cancer itself lends to anxiety and stress. Furthermore, cancer treatments can often impact endocrine and hormone changes that can change personality and behavior. Sexuality, which is intimately tied to emotional and physical well being, is a very common problem that can seriously challenge a personal relationship. Over my many years of practice I have seen some couples separate and leave in the worst of times. However, many stay strong and make the best outcomes out of a difficult situation. Most notably, I have commonly seen love be strengthened through the journey with cancer. I wanted to name names of amazing “cancer couples” who have inspired me over the years with the true resolve of living in unconditional love, day after day. You know who you are! Most importantly, I want you to know that many couples navigate cancer and its treatment well. Certainly, in all relationships during stressful times, there will be ups and downs. I am proud to say that The Center offers psychological counseling, a social worker, financial counseling, and clergy support to assist our patients through troubling times. Love is life. Without it, you have not lived. “I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.” - Mother Teresa To learn more about cancer care issues or to consult with a physician about a cancer diagnosis, contact us at 817.596.0637.
