O ne man’s trash is another man’s treasure, or so the saying goes. And that’s just one of the things they will be looking at when an archaeological dig begins at the Newberry Cabin, a circa 1880s cabin that will soon be relocated to the Doss Heritage and Culture Center’s Pioneer Cabin Park. But first a group of local archaeologists from the Tarrant County Archaeology Society, students and faculty from Weatherford College and Tarrant County colleges, as well as representatives from the Texas Historical Commission will be commencing a dig at the site of the Newberry Cabin currently located on land owned by the Doss and Knight families in western Parker County. The group has started preliminary review, which may include digging some test pits as early as this fall. Group members recently visited the site with metal detectors to determine the best places to begin their work. The land is located in the John F. Porter Survey, and according to Bill Knight, one of the owners of the property, Porter was appointed as Newberry Cabin project Serving Parker County for over 60 years DECEMBER 2016 Photo by Megan Parks Norma Plowman | Misty Plowman-Engel | James R.
